Back To School Guide: Changes at Lynbrook Schools

Look out for these changes when Lynbrook schools open next month.

It’s that time of year again- back to school! Okay, so maybe it’s still a few weeks away, but as the new school year inches closer, Patch wants to make the annual transition from sun and fun to pencils and books as seamless as possible. 

With every new school year comes changes in policy, personnel, and facility upgrades. Here’s a quick look at what to expect when the Lynbrook Union Free School District opens their doors on Sept. 4. 

Retirements - Some familiar faces won’t be returning to Lynbrook schools in September. They include: Dr. Adrienne Garver (Lynbrook USFD Director of Special Services), Angelo Mancuso (Lynbrook HS Asst. Principal), Barbara Moore (Marion Street School Principal), Joanne Lionetti (Marion Street School teacher), Stevy Feldman (Lynbrook USFD Latin and Spanish teacher), Karen Ajamian (Marion Street music teacher), and Robert DeStefano (Lynbrook HS science teacher).

Resignations - These employees won’t be returning to Lynbrook, either: Jennifer Calamia (South Middle School special education teacher), Karen Green (West End teaching assistant), Kimberly Scudlo (Marion Street teaching assistant), Theresa Ryan (Marion Street teaching assistant), Denise Nystrom (Lynbrook UFSD Administrator for Personnel and Student Support Services), Michael Capobianco (Kindergarten Center aide), and Betty Shulterbrondt (South Middle School substitute Spanish teacher).

New Principal at - Theresa Macchia will replace Barbara Moore this fall. Moore retired in June after eight years in the Lynbrook UFSD.

New Assistant Principal at - For the first time since 1969, Angelo Mancuso won't be gracing the halls of Lynbrook High School in September. Mancuso, who was appointed to the role of Assistant Principal in 1999, will be replaced by . Sarosy previously served as a Social Studies teacher at . 

Fresh Faces -   It’s time to welcome these teachers to the Lynbrook UFSD: Peter Dennis (Lynbrook High School science teacher, certified to teach biology and chemistry), John Christ (South Middle School Special Education teacher), Roxanne Migliacci (South/North Middle School English teacher), and Agata Fulton (Kindergarten Center aide).

New Policy: The Dignity Act - The act, signed into law on Sept. 13, 2010, took effect on July 1, 2012. It requires schools to provide employee training programs designed to “promote a positive school environment that is free from discrimination and harassment,” according to the Lynbrook UFSD 2012-2013 district calendar. The law also requires the discouragement and response to “incidents of discrimination and/or harassment on school property or at school functions.” Each school, including the , will have two staff members who are designated as “Dignity Act Coordinators.”  Click to learn more.

Building Improvements -  Seven school buildings will look a bit different this fall. Lynbrook HS will feature new stairwells, a renovated second floor girls‘ bathroom, a new cafeteria driveway, and reconfigured library shelving.

A new drop ceiling and lighting improvements will be installed in the General Purpose room. South Middle School saw the renovation of one science room and the addition of a new computer lab. 

Marion Street School will feature a new set of double exterior doors in the gym. added a new computer lab and three interior doors. New carpet was put down in three West End School rooms. Atlantic Avenue had insulation replaced on piping.
