Wed 65 Years, Lynbrook Couple Shares Secrets for Happy Marriage

Meyer was born in Paterson, N.J., and Annette in the Bronx.

When he was nine years old, Meyer's family moved to Brighton Beach. At the age of ten, Annette's family moved to Manhattan.

Meyer enjoyed his teen years in Brighton Beach. He started playing the clarinet, played in the band in high school and was later awarded a scholarship to Manhattan School of Music. Annette's father worked in the garment industry, but she helped deliver newspapers for her mother.

At 16, Meyer played at Carnegie Hall. At 18, he was drafted into the Army and within four months he found himself in Europe, where he served in the infantry. Meyer's quietly celebrated his 19th birthday when they crossed the Rhine.

After coming out of the Army, Meyer and Annette met through mutual friends on a double date, and after dating for one year they got married. They had three wonderful children and are now blessed with 12 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.    

At the age of 32, Annette began taking classes at Nassau Community College and worked her way up as a lab assistant and later went on to become a professor.  She taught classes in human genetics and bio-ethics, and served on the institutional review board. 

The secret to their happy marriage is to follow these six basic rules:

  1. Respect
  2. Compromise 
  3. Be sensitive to each other’s feelings
  4. Make all decisions together 
  5. Say please, thank you and I love you. 
  6. Work hard on your marriage everyday.
