On the Town: Stop Scams Against Veterans this Holiday Season

Veterans Day may have passed, but support for those willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for our country should never.

That’s why scams against veterans are so insidious and must be stopped, especially during the Holiday Season.

One way is to watch for con artists claiming to support veterans.  They sometimes appear with tin cans and tables outside supermarkets or in parking lots.

When actual veterans collect donations, they typically don their service caps and insignias; the phonies don’t.  But, they may wear camouflage outfits or fatigues purchased from Army-Navy stores.

If you’re suspicious, report the solicitor to the store manager or to the police.

Another swindle targets the former military personnel themselves.

There are New York State and Federal laws protecting current and retired members of the armed forces.  Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has issued a consumer advisory on these laws and offers tips to veterans on avoiding such scams.  Suggestions are as follows:

  • Don’t rush into making purchases or investment decisions.
  • Always carefully read through a contract.
  • Resist high-pressure sales tactics.  If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Beware of unsolicited phone offers and don’t be afraid to hang up on solicitors who are rude or pushy.
  • Use care when giving out personal information, such as a bank account or Social Security number.  Never give that information to people you don’t know.
  • Get written estimates.
  • Ask about refund policies and warranties before you buy.
  • Prepare a list of questions in advance when considering a major purchase.
  • Call the Better Business Bureau to find out about a firm’s track record.

We owe so much to our veterans.  They’ve spent enough time fighting the bad guys for us.  Help them fight new ones right here at home.
