#97 — Take A Trip To The Library

This village spot has a ton to offer residents of all ages.

Our fourth installment in the 100 Things to Do in Lynbrook is check out the Lynbrook Public Library.

The library was organized back in 1913, when 12 Lynbrook women obtained contributions of 500 books and opened a library, then located on Blake Avenue. The women rented this space at that time. It was in 1921 that they bought a building on the corner of Broadway and Merrick Road. The Lynbrook library was then built on Eldert Street in 1929.

The original Eldert Street library was home to my first job in Lynbrook. I worked there as a page and remember using the card catalog, very different from how things are looked up now — on computers. I even remember walking around that library and filing books. It was a great first job to have.

This is a place you can do many more things than when I originally worked here. There are even movie rentals and books you can download. You can also just sit, relax in peace and read a good book. If you don’t have a home computer, you can use one of theirs and do your research or just surf the Internet.

The library always seems to have something to offer everyone, from young kids to senior citizens. One of the interesting things you might want to check out is "Can We Talk?", an open discussion group that meets every other Monday from 1–2:30 p.m. If you have a question that you want to find out the answer to, have an opinion that you want to express, or if you just want to go for fun and listen to what others are saying, this group is for you. Every other week will be different, with new topics to discuss and new friends to meet.

Coming up on March 4 is “Family Fun Night," being held from 6-8 p.m. Enjoy some pizza and drinks for dinner and then have some fun with your family using the library’s great game collection.
