Tropical Storm Arthur formed Tuesday off the east coast of Florida to become the first named tropical system of this year’s Atlantic Hurricane season.

NOAA forecasts Arthur to become a hurricane by Friday morning affecting North Carolina's Outer Banks. Rough surf is expected for the Jersey Shore, Long Island and Cape Cod by the weekend.

But as Tri-State residents remember with Hurricane Sandy, and Floridians know with just about any tropical system, it only takes one to make costly damages and challenges for daily living.

Take a look at the slideshow above for tips from NOAA, the Red Cross and other emergency preparedness authorities that can help you and your loved ones survive the next tropical threat.

The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, peaking from August to mid-October.

The current Long Island forecast calls for showers and thunderstorms on Thursday, as well as showers on the Fourth of July before clearing up for the rest of the holiday weekend.
