Boy Scouts and Church Cooperate to Open Little Free Library

Submitted by Community Presbyterian Church of Malverne

If you had gone past Community Presbyterian Church of Malverne on Saturday, June 21, you would have seen a troop of boy scouts hard at work, with a little help from some knowledgeable adults. Leading the pack was Daniel Polinsky, 17, of Garden City, working toward his Eagle Scout qualification.

The result of Polinsky’s hard work is a Little Free Library, a charmingly painted wooden box on a post where anyone can take a book to read or leave a book for someone else to take. A comfortable bench and small garden invite readers to stay and relax for a few minutes. Community Presbyterian’s pastor Fritz Nelson said, “We hope our neighbors will feel welcomed into this space and see it as a community resource. Everyone is welcome to use the library, whether they are part of our church or not. Dan’s project not only adds curb appeal to the church’s property, it makes the neighborhood warmer.”

Polinsky, the son of Glory and Andrew Polinsky, is a member of Boy Scout Troop 93 in Franklin Square, led by Chris Miller. He grew up going to Sunday School at Community Presbyterian, so the church was his first stop when planning his project. “I was pleased when Roxanne MacDonald suggested this free library project. It supports my future career choice to become a teacher,” Polinsky said.

People from all over the world will be able to find Malverne’s Little Free Library on the map atwww.littlefreelibrary.org, the official website of the Little Free Library organization, which encourages the creation of and indexes libraries erected in neighborhoods around the globe.
