Franklin Hospital Gets Certification for Total Hip, Knee Replacements

By Alexandra Zendrian, North Shore-LIJ

The North Shore-LIJ Health System announced on Monday that Franklin Hospital of Valley Stream has received The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for its total hip and knee replacement programs.

To achieve Joint Commission certification, Franklin Hospital’s total joint replacement program had a voluntary onsite evaluation by a Joint Commission reviewer. The evaluation looked at Franklin’s program’s compliance with The Joint Commission’s rigorous standards of care including providing efficient care and preventing the spread of infections as much as possible. The review also included interviews with some of the program’s patients and staff.

The total joint replacement program is comprised of a variety of medical and hospital personnel such as orthopedic surgeons, physical and occupational therapists, anesthesiologists, and peri-operative services personnel, among others.

"The outstanding total joint replacement team at Franklin Hospital always provides compassionate, high-quality care to its patients, which is achieved through dedication and teamwork,” said Giles Scuderi, MD, vice president of North Shore-LIJ Health System’s orthopedics.

Franklin Hospital’s total joint replacement program has also received a five-star rating from Healthgrades for three consecutive years (2011-2013) and the hospital’s overall orthopedics program was ranked the best on Long Island in 2013.

“The Joint Commission’s certification of Franklin Hospital’s total hip and knee replacement programs underscores the clinical excellence of the programs’ staff,” said Catherine Hottendorf, RN, executive director of the hospital. “We at Franklin Hospital have an ongoing commitment to provide the community with consistently superior quality of patient care.”
