Get Out - Your Local Guide to the Weekend: Sept. 3-5

See what's happening around town this Labor Day weekend.

Hopefully everyone has recovered from last weekend’s storm and if you are looking for something fun to do this holiday weekend without going far from home, we’ve got you covered.

There are a bunch of outdoor activities that will allow you to take advantage of the unofficial last weekend of the summer. Get out there and enjoy what we’ve dug up for you!

Picnic in the Park

When: Monday, Sept. 5 at noon

Why go: Say goodbye to the summer with your neighbors and the community at a Labor Day picnic in the park. Bring your own food, drinks, lawn chairs, a picnic blanket or tent. The Civic will provide the entertainment including live music and games.

Putt and Swing 

Where: 5Towns Mini Golf and Batting Cages, 570 Rockaway Tpke. Lawrence. Phone: 516-239-1743

When: Saturday, Sunday and Monday, Sept. 3-5 from 10 a.m. – 11 p.m.

Why go: Make it an all-sports kind of day at Five Towns. Try the mini-golf course, the batting range, the paintball shooting gallery, or the arcade. There’s also a one-of-a-kind Wiffle ball batting cage! There is definitely something for everyone here and the prices are very affordable.

Sculpture Tour 

Where: Hofstra University Museum: Emily Lowe Gallery, Hempstead.

When: Saturday, Sept. 3, 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 4, 1 p.m. – 5 p.m

Why go: Adults and children explore together the outdoor sculpture collection on the University's campus. The tour begins at the Emily Lowe Gallery, located on South Campus, where you pick up your backpack. At the end of the tour, return the backpack and each child will receive a small gift from the museum.

Age: Adults and children between ages 4 through 9

Cost: free

Roller Derby 

Where: Skate Safe America, 182 Bethpage Sweet Hollow Rd., (Just off Route 110) Old Bethpage, NY 11804-1315 

When: Saturday, Sept. 3, 10:30 a.m.-10 p.m.

Why go: Want to try something different? The Long Island Roller Rebels hosts a New York State Flat Track Roller Derby Tournament featuring New York teams competing in timed challenge bouts. You’ll also find derby gear and accessories for sale, along with music, bring a chair and sit rink side.

Cost: $20 in advance, $25 at the door.  Kids ages 8 and under are free.

Quicksilver Pro Surf Competition 

Where: Long Beach Boardwalk

When: Sunday, Sept. 4 through Thursday, Sept. 15.

Why go: All eyes will be on Long Beach as professional surfers set up shop for a world champion competition that will award $1 million in prizes.  Head to the boardwalk to watch surfers in qualifying trials or competition.

Cost: free but regular $12 daily beach access fees apply through Sept. 5

 Air Show

Where: American Airpower Museum, 1230 New Highway, Republic Airport, East Farmingdale

When: Saturday, Sunday and Monday, Sept. 3-5 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Why go: Featuring Tuskegee Tribute flight, Naval Aviation Salute and "Patton's armor parade

Age: all

Cost: $15 adults, $10 seniors and vets, $5children

Craft Fair 

Where: Eisenhower Park, Field 8, Hempstead Turnpike, and Merrick Avenue in East Meadow

When: Sat. Sept. 3, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and  Sun., Sept. 4, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Why go: Unique gifts, one-of-a-kind finds are all on display. Featuring gift vendors, entertainment and food.
