Lakeview NAACP: Reinstate Malverne Faculty

Group says "the time is now" to save teachers' jobs.

The school year may be over, but the  Lakeview chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People plans to keep pressuring the Malverne School District.

After battling for justice in the ,  the Lakeview NAACP will focus their attention this summer on petitioning to reinstate the teachers who were let go as a result of budget cuts. This, along with other plans for upcoming months were discussed at the group's meeting Tuesday night at the St. Paul AME Church in Rockville Centre.

"The time is now" was the theme of the night, as members stressed the importance of making their voices heard and maintaining their progress in getting the staff members back. NAACP board members encouraged the community to write, email and call the Malverne Board of Education every day and insist those staff members be reinstated.

Members are also excitedly awaiting several events coming up this summer.  The will be traveling with 17 young artists from Nassau and Suffolk counties to California for three weeks.  Arrangements are underway for the 25th Annual Freedom Fund Awards Gala on Oct. 28, and organizers are looking for every available helping hand to make the celebration special for the silver anniversary.

During the meeting, guest speaker Carmen St. George presented herself as a candidate for the Office of Judge of the Nassau County District Court and fielded questions regarding issues important to the NAACP, including recidivism, guns, and the Rockefeller Drug Laws.

" I encourage you to look at my history [of cases]" she said. "It is important to dispense justice fairly, expeditiously, and honestly."

The next meeting of the Lakeview NAACP will be held as scheduled.
