VIDEO: World Trade Center Steel Comes To West Hempstead

Fragment of the Twin Towers to be used in 9/11 memorial in Halls Pond Park.

A piece of twisted steel recovered from the site of the World Trade Center disaster was picked up from John F. Kennedy Airport Wednesday and delivered via an official escort of police and fire vehicles to West Hempstead. It will be used in a future memorial to the 12 West Hempstead residents and others who lost their lives in the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

After touring the Lakeview and West Hempstead communities, the steel finally came to its new temporary home, the library at , where it will wait while the memorial it's to be a part of is constructed.

Watch the video report above to see the steel make its way through the community and hear West Hempstead Community Support President Rosalie Norton and members of the Lakeview Volunteer Fire Department, who lost one of their own - ex-chief and fire commissioner Robert DeAngelis - when the Twin Towers collapsed.

We had a Red-tailed hawk in our back yard about 6 years ago. There was a noted silence in the air asRead More all the other birds didn't want their presence to be known. It was pretty awesome.
