Smooth Skating at Greis Park in Lynbrook

Roller Hockey League hosts the season's first sign-up and open skate session with their brand new rink.

The Lynbrook Roller Hockey League (LRHL) held its first sign-up session for the fall season on Aug. 26, which included a three-hour open-skating session. Upon my arrival I met with Patrick Stapleton, president of LRHL, and later, Tom Keane, an active member and referee for LRHL and Greis Park Recreation.

The Lynbrook Roller Hockey League was established in 1998. Since then, it has grown and expanded to include many families and local residents in Lynbrook and the surrounding areas. The league is open to all children, boys and girls, ages 6-18. The league holds practice and games at the Lynbrook Roller Rink in Greis Park, located on Horton Avenue. The rink recently underwent renovations in the beginning of August and now has a brand new, state-of-the-art skating surface.

The open skate session began at 6 p.m. and ran until 9 p.m. Tom Keane spent the session on the rink with the kids, coaching and playing many practice games. When he wasn't assisting the players, he was conversing with families about the upcoming season. After I snapped all my photos, I got a chance to speak with him regarding the league and its new rink.

Tom is a resident of Lynbrook and has been involved in Lynbrook recreational and athletic activities for several years. He was very excited about the new surface, assuring that it is much easier to play on and that it will be a wonderful addition to the already fun-filled, family oriented activity. All the attending players agreed with positive responses, adding the only downside was it may be a little slippery after the rain. Aside from that, they feel like they are almost playing on real ice! Tom went on to explain how the early sign-ups are great because it allows potential new players to meet others and get a feel for the game.

The new fall season kicks off the third week of September. For open skate session schedules and sign-up information, call the LRHL hotline at (516) 766-5500.
