UPDATED: Malverne School Budget Passes, Hopkins Re-Elected

Residents approve additional proposition along with budget.

Malverne residents passed the 2013-14 school budget Tuesday and re-elected Danielle Hopkins to the board of education.

The approximate $51.2 million budget passed by a final margin of 599 to 439.

The levy-to-levy increase for this year’s budget is 3.66 percent, which, according to the school district, is its second lowest increase of the last 15 years.

Incumbent Danielle Hopkins defeated challenger Jan Kasal for her seat on the Malverne Board of Education by a final margin of 585-383.

Newcomer John Tulley was also elected to the board of education after running unopposed, collecting 625 votes in the process.

Residents also approved a proposition to allow the district to use $1.6 million from capital reserve funds for capital improvements to Malverne High School and Howard T. Herber Middle School.

The proposition, which passed by a margin of 559 to 330, will have no effect on the tax levy.
