#98 - Take A Trip To The Movies

Check out a film at the Lynbrook movie theater on Merrick Road.

Our third installment in the "100 Things to Do in Lynbrook" is to go see a film at the Lynbrook movie theater, located at 321 Merrick Road. With schools closing next week, it's a perfect time to take the whole family.

This is another place in our village that can only be known as legendary. I think Lynbrook residents are very fortunate to have so many places that have been around for many years. My research found that this theater has been around since at least 1918, probably even before that.

The movie theater is owned by Regal and , but that is still in the negotiating stage.

Being a longtime Lynbrook resident, I remember going to this theater when there was only one movie playing there. It was all red velvet at the time and the upstairs was the balcony section. As time went on it was changed to two theaters, then four and eventually it is the six that it is now. I remember each of these changes and renovations being made to keep up with all the new ones being built in local towns. This was a place that Lynbrook residents did not want to see shut down the way the former Studio One was.

I actually remember sitting in the Lynbrook movie theater's balcony with my parents as a child and watching movies on the huge screen. My husband and I had our first date at this same theater, and that summer we saw the same movie so many times (remember there used to only be one movie showing there). It is now a place my teenagers can go to and see the latest movies. I am also sure every Lynbrook resident has been to this place many times and has many memories of this legendary place.
