East Meadow Pathmark to Close

The general manager of the store, which has been in East Meadow for more than 30 years, says that it will close on May 4.

Another major business will be closing its doors in East Meadow.

Pathmark, which has been on Front Street for 35 years, will shutter on May 4, according to Craig Peters, the general manager of the store.

"It is being done because of business decisions," he said. "The company decided to shut it down."

Nearby business owners were shocked to hear that the market will close.

"It's horrible," Jody an employee at Bagel Biz said. "This is known as the Pathmark Marshalls Center. "It's like this all over Long Island. Anytime you go to a mall it is filled with vacancies."

Other businesses that are located inside the Pathmark building, such as a barber shop and a card store, may suffer due to it closing.

John Delassandro, owner of Elite Cards and Gifts, said that he may have to shut down his business when Pathmark closes.

Like East Meadow Patch on Facebook.

"I have been here nine years and I get my business from Pathmark customers," he said. "I will not survive without Pathmark and unless they put another supermarket there I am done."

Pathmark first opened in East Meadow on Oct. 8, 1978. The store currently employs 110 people.

"Most of the employees will be moved to other stores," Peters said.

In less than six months, big businesses such as Zorns and Hooters have closed in East Meadow.

Delassandro said that it is more than a poor economy that are causing storefronts to shutter.

"I believe that it is due to competition and the rents being so high," he said. "It's rough."

To Brent M: I have wondered the same thing. I am torn between gep and EM. Which one is really "endorsed by no one"?????? Perhaps both.......

hi paul and brent , if you been to the home depot in east meadow on the weekends especialy in the summer you have to watch out you dont get run over if your walking or hit if your driving, i agree with you with the bars when i was a kid i saw plenty of fights in the parking alot near zachary's and buttles. what i do for a living includes studying traffic patterns and that would create even more traffic jams on hempstead turnpike, I came out to east meadow a couple of weeks ago and couldnt believe how long it took me to go from front st to tri-county flea market. as for sonic being a family-type restuarant, just like burger king near the park, when i was visiting i went in there , there were more homeless people in the restuarant then everyday people, and brent home depot owns the old k-mart property, if you from levittown youll see what happens in months to come.

Yes Gep.. but doesnt the Lights and Pattern of Lights also have something to do with the traffic patterns..?? Certain time of days yes traffic heading east in that area is horrible.. but also isnt there a significant amount of lights that arent coordinated together in that area that contribute to the traffic?? ..and the Home Depot needs to coordinate better where there garden center is.. you have people parking where ever and walking whenever they want.. it has lawsuit written all over it
