Four ways to beat the heat in Malverne and West Hempstead

As the community shoveled its way out of several feet of snow months ago, residents probably longed for sunnier days like this. Now as the temperature creeps into the nineties this week though, suddenly those frigid winter days seem pretty inviting.

As of noon of Wednesday afternoon, the thermometer was just one degree shy of hitting 90 in Malverne and West Hempstead, according to the National Weather Service.

To help you stay cool despite this first heat wave, Patch has compiled a list of local spots to find some relief.

  • Town of Hempstead Echo Park Pool in West Hempstead: Although the outdoor pools will not open until June 18, residents can take a dip in one of the two large indoor pools between 10 a.m. and 9:45 p.m. Learn more by
  • Lakeview Public Library on Woodfield Road. On warmer days this public library turns into a Cooling Center. When the thermometer rises above 90 degrees, the library opens one hour earlier, at 9 a.m., to welcome residents that need some relief from the heat.
  • Scooops in Malverne. Bring down your body's temperature from the inside out by enjoying an ice cream sundae or fat-free frozen yogurt from this fun, local hot spot. Currently, they are open Mondays through Thursdays from 2:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Fridays from 2:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays 2:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. They will be shifting to an extended schedule, opening earlier in the afternoon and serving customers till 10 p.m. daily, later this month.o learn more about the shop and its many flavors.
  • Witches Brew in West Hempstead. Treat yourself to a tasty iced tea, coffee or frozen beverage while on the go or relaxing in the laid back lounge of the Witches Brew. to see store hours and location.
