Lynbrook Bank Gobbles Up Donations

Bethpage Federal Credit Union collects canned goods, money for Island Harvest.

Gobbling up donations for Thanksgiving is part of Bethpage Federal Credit Union's (BFCU) mission as part of the Lynbrook community. Last week, collected canned goods for Island Harvest in preparation for Thanksgiving.

In Lynbrook, Island Harvest made a pick up on Nov. 1 of over 12 bags of food that members had donated for the hunger-relief organization. Bank teller Annalee Joseph commented, "We had a member, Peter, who came back more than once with bags of food."

On Nov. 5, the Lynbrook BFCU took in cash to pay for Island Harvest turkeys, at $10 each. Late in the day, the bank had collected over $100, with over $700 garnered among the other branches.

Last year, BFCU CEO Kirk Kordelski hoped to collect or provide money to buy 500 turkeys for Island Harvest, but as Linda Stephenson, BFCU's Lynbrook branch manager explained, "It was an unexpected wow as we reached 5,000 turkeys."

This success brought the drive back this year with more sponsors such as Cablevision, Girl Scouts of Nassau and Suffolk County, the New York Islanders, and National Grid. The goal this year is 8,000 turkeys and 10,000 pounds of food for Island Harvest.

The main BFCU branch location, located in Bethpage, arranged for folks to drop off turkeys on Nov. 5. If you brought a turkey in to the Bethpage branch, donors would receive a ticket to an Islanders game, chances for raffle prizes, a chance to meet  Islanders' mascot Sparky, and plenty of fun.

Online turkey donations can still be made in $15 increments at Island Harvest's website.

The BFCU, continuing its community involvement this month, will be one of the sponsors of Fly With The Owls Run/Walk on Nov. 20. For more information on that event, click here.
