Malverne Economics Teacher Named Gold Star Teacher of the Year

Teacher will be honored at the annual MoneyPOWER conference for financial literacy in New York City in November.

Michael Whalen, an economics teacher at Malverne High School, has been named a Gold Star Teacher for the 2012-13 school year by W!SE, an educational nonprofit that endeavors to build financial literacy in young people.

Whalen was chosen for the honor based upon his students achieving a 90 percent passing rate on the W!SE Financial Literacy Certification Test last year. He will be honored with the award at the annual MoneyPOWER Conference for Financial Literacy in New York City in November.

Whalen is one of approximately 300 teachers across the country who met the criteria for this award.
