Mur-Lees Discount to Be Offered For Parkinson's Research Donation

Local department store seeking donations for Parkinson's research.

Big name appliance stores aren’t the only places to find great deals on Thanksgiving Weekend in Lynbrook. In honor of its 65th anniversary, on Atlantic Avenue is offering a 15% discount for anyone who donates to the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

The sale is being held in honor of Mur-Lee’s co-founder, Murray Levitt. After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in his late 60’s, Levitt passed away in 2008 at the age of 89.

“Our father always donated to all the local charities, as well as many families or persons in need,” owner said. “We are honoring our father by celebrating his commitment to others.”

According to their website, the Michael J. Fox foundation is “dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease through an aggressively funded research agenda.” The foundation was started by actor Michael J. Fox in 2000. This is the fourth year that Mur-Lees has partnered with the charity. The store has already raised thousands of dollars towards the cause.

“We decided to go with The Michael J. Fox Foundation because everything goes directly towards research,” Levitt said.

The Michael J. Fox discount is one of two ways that Mur-Lees customers can save this weekend. Shoppers can sign up for American Expresses’ “Small Business Saturday” to receive a $25 credit for purchases made on Nov. 26.

The promotion, in its second year, was designed to provide a boon to smaller establishments who take a big hit when trying to compete with “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday” specials.

“I think it’s a great idea that American Express came up with this promotion,” Levitt said. “As a small business, we are at a disadvantage with the big stores and their huge advertising budgets. Local chambers across the country are always looking for ways to promote shopping locally. The small local stores are what help support the community.”

Customers must sign up for an American Express Card and use that card for a purchase of $25 dollars or more to be eligible for the credit, according to Small Business Saturday’s official Facebook page.

Mur-Lees is open on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. It “offers a wide selection of men’s and boy’s suits, sportswear, shoes, shirts and tuxedo rentals.” They also offer a lay-away program.

The store can be found on the internet at Murlees.com. Visit the Small Business Saturday website for more information on the promotion.
