This week, Pathmark managers announced that the store will close in May, but the landlord of the 80,000 sq. ft. property said that a new large business is well on it's way.
"I am very positive that a new supermarket or a large anchor tenant will be coming to that property," Landlord Geoffrey Serota said. "We are meeting with four different supermarkets and we are working very diligently to fill the property."
Serota, along with his father and brother, are the owners of the Pathmark Marshalls Shopping Center, also known as East Meadow Mall, and built it 35 years ago.
"Now that Pathmark is leaving, we feel better about it because they have not been operating properly for the last few years," he said. "And I want residents to know that Marshalls has no intention of closing."
Serota said that the grocery store closed because it took on too much debt, it was not operating properly and it was in direct competition with the nearby Waldbaums. Both Pathmark and Waldbaums are owned by A&P.

Serota said that he plans to do a complete renovation of the property and will "de-mall" it. Businesses such as a gift store and a barber shop are located within the Pathmark building.
"We have no intention of getting rid of those businesses and if they plan to stay we will move them to another part of the shopping center," he said. "We are going to redo it and give it a facelift."
He said that a new business should be open in the Pathmark building in 2014.
"It's going to take some time," Serota said. "We are in the preliminary stages right now."
A new dry cleaning store is also set to open in the East Meadow Mall this year.
Serota said that he cares about the East Meadow community and business owners and that he has no intention of letting them down.
"We believe in East Meadow and this is a great area," he said. "We feel very positive about what's coming."
