Poll: Customers Brace for New Bank Fees

Bank of America set to institute debit card charges, while others threaten to increase checking account costs.

Bank of America said last week it plans to start charging customers a $5 monthly fee for using debit cards.

Other banks are also looking to drum up more fee income in response to the "swipe fee" law, which cut deeply the amount banks charge merchants when customers pay with their debit card.

Also, the New York Post reported that Citibank has already increased its monthly checking charges. The Post added that Bank of America and TD Bank have, or will soon introduce, no-minimum accounts that carry monthly charges between $3.99 and $9.

JPMorgan Chase is also testing higher debit card fees, according to this Fox Business story, which said Citibank won't install debit card charges.

Meanwhile, Gold Coast Bank of Long Island said it would not add debit card fees.

In a statement, Gold Coast said it is "refusing to penalize its customers who do not carry cash."

Some pols were infuriated by Bank of America's new debit card charge, which goes into effect next year. Sen Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, told BofA customers to "get the heck out of that bank."

But Republican lawmaker Sen. Bob Corker said customers are paying the price for unwarranted regulations.
