Smiling Irish Eyes, Fierce Soda Bread Battle in Malverne

Residents painted the down green and put their Irish Soda Bread to the test on St. Paddy's Day in Malverne.

Fighting Irish Soda Bread bakers and revelers decked in green celebrated St. Paddy's Day in Malverne last Thursday.

, known for their green brews, Irish dishes, festive music and all-out celebrations on March 17, was packed with diners and bar-goers throughout the day. From the shamrock-ed wall decor to the green garb on its patrons, the pub was bursting with the spirit of the holiday.

Across the street, at , a different St. Pat's tradition was taking place. For the third consecutive year, residents were squaring off in a battle to see who had the best Irish Soda Bread. Dr. Pennie Schwartz received eight entries this year, and left the decision of which one was tops up to the taste buds of Malverne Mayor Patricia Norris McDonald and Civic Association President Peter Robideau. The judges were impressed by each one they sampled, and found it very challenging to select a winner.

After some deliberation and second helpings, they awarded first place to Jen Hannon, second to Izzi Maria and third to Fran Gianito. (s bread was all one of their favorites.)
