Storm Knocks Out Power in Malverne, West Hempstead

Outages reported near Hempstead Avenue Wednesday night.

UPDATE: July 19, 9:46 a.m.  Power has been restored to all affected customers in West Hempstead. Less than five customers are still without power in Malverne.

Original Story--

Thunder, lighting, high winds and heavy rain struck Long Island Wednesday night, and left close to 20,000 Long Island Power Authority customers across the region without power.

As of 7 p.m., there were 182 active outages across the area, including some homes near Hempstead Avenue in Malverne and West Hempstead. Roughly 25 customers in the northern part of West Hempstead and 22 in Malverne, south of the railroad tracks, were experiencing outages.

LIPA estimates that power will be  restored to the Malverne homes by 9:30 p.m. and to those in West Hempstead by 11 p.m. There are no active outages in Lynbrook at this time.
