West Hempstead Mandee Closes Amid Bankruptcy Reports

The Hempstead Turnpike store adds to vacancies in West Hempstead. What should open here?

Shoppers at  in West Hempstead took advantage of some major sales in late January as the Hempstead Turnpike clothing store cleared out its inventory and prepared to go out of business.

The West Hempstead location is among a number of Mandee stores in the area that have been quietly closing during the past. While there was no official announcement from the discount women's fashion retailer that it was shuttering some of its stores, recent reports indicate the company could be in peril.

Bloomberg news reported in January that Mandee parent Big M may seek bankruptcy protection, which could result in more store closings. The company hasn't confirmed reports.

When Patch visited the store Wednesday, the large commercial property was completely empty and a sign on the outside directed customers to shop at Mandee's East Meadow and Levittown locations, also located on Hempstead Turnpike.

What are your thoughts on the store's closing? Did you shop there? What business would you like to see open up in its place? Tell us in the comments section below.
