Legis. Solages Lobbies Guv for Better Air Traffic Conditions

“We must protect our quality of life!”

In a letter to Governor Cuomo dated Oct. 3, 2013, Legislator Carrié Solages (D-Elmont) lobbied for him to sign Senate Bill 3841, which would require the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to conduct a noise and land use compatibility survey as outlined under federal aviation regulations, as well as biennial public hearings regarding aircraft noise issues.

Legislator Solages has received numerous complaints from residents regarding the noise created by air traffic and about a perceived increase in air traffic over the Elmont and Valley Stream communities.

“This past summer, approximately every 3 minutes, our community was bombarded with air traffic,” said Legislator Solages. “This is an attack on our quality of life.”

Legislator Solages also mentions in the letter, “The vast majority of my Nassau County Legislative District 3 is located directly in the arrival and departure corridor of John F. Kennedy International Airport.  The proximity of my district to the airport results in significant air traffic, including hundreds of very low-flying aircraft and extensive noise pollution.”

The survey called for in S.3841 equates to a quality of life issue for Nassau residents.  Similar surveys have been conducted at other major airports in the region, such as Boston Logan, Philadelphia International and Baltimore/ Washington International Airports.

“I ask that the study be undertaken as soon as possible,” said Legislator Solages.
