#66 - Take Your Hairstyle to New Heights

Marcucc hair salon in Malverne can give you a stylish up-do, highlights or even feathers.

The latest addition to our "Top 100 Things To Do in Malverne and West Hempstead" is sure to ruffle some feathers.

From Hollywood to Main Street, women of all ages can be seen sporting fowl-inspired hair extensions and Malverne is no exception.

At Marcucc for Hair on Hempstead Avenue, the salon has seen clients from 4 to 60 years old walk out with a feather or two in their hair. One woman got a dozen!

Even this reporter couldn't pass on a few plumes, opting for a pair of natural brown and (Patch) green feathers during a recent appointment with salon owner, MaryAnn Schierle.  (You can get yours at the salon, open Tuesdays through Saturdays, or at the Malverne Merchants street fair on Oct. 23, where Marcucc will be outfitting locals with these popular hair accessories and pink extensions for Breast Cancer Awareness.)

But despite the current feather craze, it's professional services like coloring - both highlights and corrective -  hair treatments, and sophisticated up-dos that Marcucc specializes in.

"We are the up-do place," salon receptionist Lois Anderson says, adding that clients come in for weddings, proms, sweet sixteens and other special occasions. They can even get their make-up done too with the salon's own line of cosmetics.

The full range of services along with a friendly staff have kept the salon in business since 1979.

"Marcucc for Hair has been in this sweet quaint town for over 30 years," says Schierle, a Malverne native who purchased the business in 2009. "To our clients 'It’s like home.'"

Before taking the reigns, Schierle had worked as a hair dresser at Marcucc for over a decade. She maintained the level of service that customers had come to expect, but brought "a more homey and youthful feeling" to the neighborhood salon.

"My mom always said 'personality is everything,' and in my business it’s one of the most important, along with talent," she says.

For Schierle is not just cutting hair. "I love to be artistic and change people's looks," she says. Her favorite moments are when clients look into the mirror when she is finished and say, "Oh my God!"

"Some even start crying because they love how they look," she adds.
