Feb. 1: Brown Water Blues, House Fire and More Things to Know Today

A look at the top stories and events happening today in Malverne and West Hempstead.

Here's a quick guide to help you stay on top of the big news and interesting events happening in your neighborhood. 

Check out the five must-know things for Feb. 1.

  1. Water Fight: Fed up with brown tap water pouring from their faucets for years, over 100 Malverne residents have joined together to demand their local water company clear things up. Patch interviewed residents who have been affected by this problem and Long Island American Water Company President William M. Varley. We'll have the full story at 1p.m. today.
  2. Fire in Lakeview: For the second time in the past five days, local firefighters were called to the scene of a brutal blaze at a local home. Volunteers from , West Hempstead and Malverne fought a fire that broke out in the basement of a home on Orlando Avenue, causing substantial damage and leading to a search for the homeowner's pet.   3. Say it Ain't Snow: Malverne and West Hempstead will be hit with snow this morning before 9 a.m. which will switch over to a mix of snow, freezing rain, and sleet until noon, when the sleet is expected to stop giving way to just snow and freezing rain. The daytime is expected to bring about 0.1 inch of ice and 2 to 4 inches of snow and sleet, which can create dangerous driving conditions.Then, more freezing rain and sleet is expected for the night.
  4. Students Honored: Top students at West Hempstead High School will be inducted into the National Honor Society tonight. The ceremony starts at 7p.m. At St. Thomas the Apostle School in West Hempstead, it's Student Appreciation Day. Part of the Catholic Schools Week celebration, students will receive a special lunched provided by the Parents Club and participate in a talent show later this afternoon.
