Get Out - Your Local Guide to the Weekend, April 9-10

A look at the top local events for adults and kids taking place this weekend.

Spring crafts, Zumba class, a pie-eating contest to save lives and a scavenger hunt to stop hunger are among the top events happening nearby this weekend. Plus, the Easter Bunny will be hopping into the neighborhood to visit with kids.

There's something for everyone, no matter your age or interests.

Antique Road Show

Where: Malverne Public Library

What:  Eddie Costello's Trash or Treasure Antiques Road Show    

When:  Saturday, April 9, 2 – 4 p.m.

Why go:  Learn how to identify today's hottest antiques and collectibles in this informative and entertaining lecture. The first 40 registered people who attend will get a free appraisal of an item they bring. All others are welcome to enjoy the lecture. Please note: due to their vast number and variety, coins and stamps will not be appraised.

Hunt to Help Hungry 

Where:  All around Malverne (Meet at Our Lady of Lourdes Church) 

What: Souper Scavenger Hunt

When: Saturday, April 9, noon – 3 p.m.

Why go: Help those in need by stocking the Our Lady of Lourdes food pantry in a fun and different way. Form a team of your family, friends or neighbors (or be placed on an existing team) and compete for prizes. If you are unable to join a team, you may participate by leaving a bag of non-perishable foods on your stoop during these hours. Prior registration is greatly appreciated. Please contact the OLL rectory or call 241-1896.

Where: West Hempstead Public Library

What: Book Sale

When: Saturday and Sunday, April 9 and 10, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Why go: The library will offer many books for sale to the community. Check it out and score a great deal on some summer reading.

 Family Fun

Where: West Hempstead Public Library

What: Family Gaming Day

When: Saturday and Sunday, April 9 and 10, 1 – 4 p.m.

Why go: Bring the whole family to the Children’s Program Room to play board games that may be new to you.

 Enjoy Pie, Save Lives

Where: Woodmere Fire Department, 20 Irving Pl. Woodmere

What: A “Pie Party”  - - Bake for a Cure

When: Sunday, April 10, noon- 3:30 p.m.

Why go: Spend a wonderful day with family and friends and pie! What could be better you ask? How about all proceeds raised are for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. There will be unlimited homemade pie samples and a pie contest! Bake a pie or dessert for entry into the contest. Prizes, pie-eating contest, silent auction, music and more all for a wonderful cause.

 Easter Bunny Hops Into RVC

Where: Molloy College, Anselma Room in the Kellenberg Building. 1000 Hempstead Ave. RVC

What: Easter Bunny Brunch

When: Saturday April 9, 11 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

Why go: An Easter themed brunch that will provide tons of fun activities to enjoy, including coloring, games, arts & crafts, and face painting. You can even get your picture taken with the Easter Bunny! There will also be an outdoor Easter egg hunt, provided that weather conditions allow.  Bagels, muffins, donuts, coffee, tea, and juice will be served.

Cost: Children under 12 get in free, advanced purchase tickets are $5.00 per adult or $7 at the door

Spring Shopping

Where: Rockville Centre Municipal Lot, Sunrise Hwy & N. Long Beach Rd. 

What: RVC Spring Festival

When: Saturday and Sunday, April 9 and 10, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Why go: A fun filled outing, featuring gift, arts and crafts vendors, food and more

Get Tangled

 Where: Island Park Public Library

What: Film presentation of Tangled

When: Saturday, April 9, at 2 p.m.

Why go: When the kingdom's most wanted bandit hides in a mysterious tower, the last thing he expects to find is Rapunzel, a spirited teen with an unlikely superpower: 70 feet of magical golden hair!

Age: rated PG

Nature Creations

What: Nature Art Project

When: Saturday, April 9, 10 a.m. - noon

Why go: Create fun crafts out of natural resources. Your kids will enjoy working on these cool, unique projects while you enjoy the new and interesting things they are learning along with it.

Wake Up and Dance

What: Zumba Class

When: Saturday, April 9, 8:30-9:30 a.m.

Why go: Find out what the new craze in fitness is all about. Zumba is a fun, engaging workout that appeals to people with all different levels of physical fitness.  Pay-as-you-go is the perfect way to get acquainted with this type of class. Be sure to wear smooth-soled sneakers and work-out wear.

Cost: $5 per class, pay as you go.

Easter Craft

Where: Michael’s Craft Store, 3160 Long Beach Rd in Oceanside

What: Easter Pail decorating class

When:  Sunday, April 10, 1-3 p.m.

Why go: Take some time out to decorate your own Easter pail. Michael’s has everything you need to get you ready for the big hunt! 

Age: 3 and up
