Get Out: Your Local Guide to the Weekend, Aug. 20-21

The fun is happening close to home this Saturday and Sunday.

If you are looking for something different to do this weekend, we’ve found some great activities for you.

From live comedy and theatrical performances to bowling for cats and a Nickelodeon star, there are plenty of things to do close to home for residents of all ages. 

Get out and about this weekend and have some fun.

Jim Breuer Live

Where: Mulcahy's of Wantagh Pub and Concert Hall;

When: Friday, Aug. 19 at 8 p.m.

Why Go: The versatile Jim Breuer, an actor, comedian and musician (you may know him from Saturday Night Live fame) performs at Mulcahy's with his Heavy Metal Family Tour.

Cost: $12-15 per person.

Dora the Explorer Live

Where: Long Island Children’s Museum

When: Saturday, Aug. 20 at 11 a.m and 1 p.m.

Why go: Dora, her best buddy, Boots the Monkey, and the rest of their friends embark on an exciting trip to Treasure Island. The audience helps them navigate over Dancing Mountain, through Silly Singing Bridge and to confront the Pirate Piggies. Along the way, the audience will use their map-reading, counting, musical and language skills to successfully help Dora reach the treasure.

Age: 3 and up

Cost: $12 per person

Bowl For Cats

Where: RVC Lanes, 100 Maple Ave., Rockville Centre

When: Saturday, Aug. 20 from 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.

Why go: Courageous Cats, a feline rescue organization based in Malverne, is holding a bowling fundraiser at RVC Lanes to support the their efforts to help abandoned, sick and feral cats in the area. There will also be a raffles, refreshments, food, a cash bar and other fun ways to support this non-profit while enjoying a night of bowling.

Cost: $35 for unlimited bowling, shoes, food and non-alcoholic beverages. $20 for everything but unlimited bowling

Electronic Music Festival

Where: Nikon at Jones Beach Theater

When: Sunday, Aug. 21 at noon

Why Go: Identity Fest is an electronic-only music festival with well-known DJs and live performers playing all day.

Cost: starting at $85.

“My Son The Waiter, A Jewish Tragedy”

Where: Long Beach Public Library, 111 W Park Ave, Long Beach

 When: Saturday, Aug. 20 at 2 p.m.

Why go: The Long Beach Public Library will be hosting Brad Zimmerman's one man show that focuses on growing up, acting and waiting tables. Zimmerman's stand-up comedy is known as poignant and hilarious.

Cost: free 

Health Fair

Where: 188 Vincent Ave, Lynbrook

When: Saturday, Aug. 20, from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Why go: Receive free health screenings and information to help you lead your best life at the K.A.G.M. Health Fair.

Cost: free

“A Chorus Line”

Where: BroadHollow Theatre, Elmont Memorial Library 700 Hempstead Trpk.

When: Saturday, Aug. 20 at  8 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 21 at 2:30 p.m.

Why go: The Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical "A Chorus Line" leaps, turns and taps its way to center stage. A collection of dancers auditioning for the chorus line are asked to tell the director about themselves in order to land a part in a Broadway show. Songs include “What I Did for Love,” “At the Ballet,” and “One.”

Cost: Adults $25, Seniors $23, Students $18, Children $14, all tickets at door $28

Restaurant Night

Where: Backstage Nite Club, 948 Broadway, Woodmere

When: Sunday, Aug. 21, from 9:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Why go: Come out to Backstage Nite Club every Sunday night for half price pitchers, $5 personal pizzas and $10 for unlimited bowling.

Arts and Crafts Fair

Where: Long Beach Boardwalk at Riverside Blvd. Call 516-432-1192 for more info

When: Saturday, Aug. 20 and Sunday, Aug. 21 from 9 a.m.–6 p.m.

Why go: Long Beach Historical and Preservation Society is sponsoring The Annual Arts and Crafts Fair on the Boardwalk at Riverside Boulevard. Come browse, buy and enjoy more than 150 vendors of handicrafts and a variety of food specialties.
