Get Out: Your Local Guide to the Weekend, July 16-17

The best events happening near you this weekend.

Forecasters are predicting beautiful weather this weekend for the area and we’ve found some great outdoor activities for you. There is kayaking and concerts and fairs, just to name a few.

Shakespeare in the Park

Where: Gazebo at in Malverne (near the train station on Church Street)

Why go: Malverne's own Dan Higgins, a finalist in the MSG Varsity Talent Show, is featured in this outdoor performance of "Billy Shakes."

Outdoor Magic Show

Where: Hempstead Lake State Park, West Hempstead (Exit 18 off the Southern State Parkway)

When: Sunday, July 17, 2 p.m.

Why go: This interactive show features magic and will be sure to entertain all. Bring your chairs or blankets to enjoy a day at the park.

Long Beach Craft Fair

Where: Edward Boulevard to Long Beach Road on the Boardwalk, Long Beach

When: Saturday, July 16, 9 a.m.- 6 p.m. and Sunday, July 17, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Why go: More than 250 East Coast artisans gather on the lengthy Long Beach boardwalk, featuring hand-made crafts, fine art, jewelry and much more. You’ll also find international food vendors and gelato-filled cannoli from Sicily.

Billy Joel Tribute

Where: Harry Chapin Lakeside Theater at Eisenhower Park, East Meadow

When: Saturday, July 16, 7:30 p.m.

Why go: Henry Haid and his Glass Houses band pays tribute to Long Island’s star recording artist, Billy Joel.

Cost: free

Anime Convention

Where: Rockville Centre Library, 221 N. Village Ave.

When: Saturday, July 16, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Why go: Anime hits Rockville Centre! This convention will offer fan panels, crafts, screenings, an artist gallery and a taiko performance. There will also be an open forum featuring artist Misako Rocks.

Beatlemania in Concert

Where: Michael J. Tully Park, Evergreen and Denton Avenues, New Hyde Park

When: Saturday, July 16,  6:15 p.m.

Why go: The music of the Beatles are performed by the cast of Beatlemania. Singer/songwriter Barry Waller performs as the opening act. In the event of rain, the concert will be held at Chaminade High School.

Antique Car Show

Where: Cedarhurst Park, Cedarhurst Ave.

When: Sunday, July 17, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Why go: This auto show puts antique cars on display and will offer peer judging.

Kayaking Tour

Where: Empire Kayaks, 4 Empire Blvd. in Island Park

When: Sunday, July 17, 10 a.m. - noon

Why go: Take a guided kayak tour through Garrett Marsh and partake in discussion with a local marine biologist.

Why go: This outdoor fair features food, arts and crafts, antiques, collectibles and gifts.
