Get Out: Your Local Guide to the Weekend, May 27-30

The best events happening near you this weekend.

Happy Memorial Day weekend to you and your family!

Since this is a holiday weekend, we've included some Monday events, too, and one for the kids that is happening this Friday. So get out and spend time with your loved ones as you enjoy the extra day off and pay tribute to America's heroes.

Planes Perform 

Where: Jones Beach State Park (www.jonesbeachairshow.com)

What: Jones Beach Air Show

When: Saturday, May 28, and Sunday, May 29, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Why go: This Long Island tradition features military and civilian performers, like the US Army Golden Knights parachute team and the Blue Angels. Parking Fields 4 and 5 offer the best views, Gorman says. To beat the crowds plan to get there early - by 10 a.m. - even if you're just going to see the Blue Angels later in the day. Spread your blankets on the beach, or hang out on the boardwalk, where carnival-style food vendors will be hawking hot dogs, clam chowder, souvlaki and more. Take the kids to the west and east bathhouses for displays and activities such as inflatable slides and a rock climbing wall.

Cost:  Admission is free, but there is a $10 parking fee

 Running Tribute to Veterans

 Where: Long Beach, Magnolia Blvd. and West Park Ave.

What: 35th Annual City Managers 10 Mile Run “Salute to Our Veterans” 

When: Sunday, May 29 at 8 a.m.

Why go: A great way to get out and enjoy the City of Long Beach and support a great cause.  Registration of $20  (before 5 p.m. on Friday) will be held at the Long Beach Recreation Center on Magnolia Blvd. at West Bay Drive. Registration after that time will take place at the Long Beach Ice Arena at 150 West Bay Dr. beginning at 6:30 a.m. You can also register online at www.active.com. Register online at active.com. Creative Shopping

Where: Nassau Coliseum

What: Craft and Gift Fair

When: Saturday, May 28, and Sunday, May 29, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Why go: This large craft fair will offer unique gifts for everyone. These creations are made by local craftsmen and artists. Check it out and you might discover that one-of-a-kind treasure!

Parades 

Where: Malverne, West Hempstead, Rockville Centre, Lynbrook, Long Beach, Inwood and Lawrence-Cedarhurst will each be holding a parade this weekend to honor vets who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

What: Memorial Day Parades

When: Sunday, May 29 (Inwood only) and Monday, May 30, for a list of start time and locations for each of the parades.

Why go: Only once a year does your community come together to celebrate the men and women who have gave their lives to protect our freedoms. It's a great opportunity to connect with your neighbors, create memories with your family and pay tribute to those who have gave so much.

Band at Bordeaux

Where: Bordeaux, 24 Sunrise Hwy, Rockville Centre

What: Pep and Soul Band Performs www.pepandthesoulexplosionband.com

When: May 28, 9 p.m. - 1 a.m.

Why go: Enjoy one of Long Island's best Classic 70s 80s R&B/Soul & Funk groups while sipping on cocktails at this local lounge.

Price: No cover

Sign Up for Sports Camps

Where: Sportset, 60 Maple Ave., Rockville Centre

What: Youth Multi-Sports Camps Registration

When: Saturday, May 28,  6 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Why Go: School will be out before you know it and you're kids will be looking for fun activities. Sign them up for one of these sports camps, which are open to kids ages 3-6. for more information.
