Going Green in Malverne - What You Can Do for Earth Day

Patch talked with Diane Jessup, the head of the village's Beautification Committee, to see what residents can do to go green.

Whether its the concern for saving the planet or saving money, "going green" continues to be topic on most people's minds. In honor of Earth Day, Patch sat down with Diane Jessup, the head of the Beautification Committee in Malverne, to see what the village is doing to be green and how residents can do their pary.

Jessup explained that one the most recent changes the village has made to be more Earth-friendly is starting to . “We have been trying to get the village to recycle cardboard for a while, "Jessup said. "Now, that it is happening we are very excited about it."

Residents can take part of making the village greener too, explained Jessup. One thing that can be done is replacing died trees that are on the their property.

“There is a $200 rebate program when you plant a large growth tree on your front lawn,” stated Jessup. Planting trees around your house also cuts down the cost of air condition in the summer because it keeps your house cooler.

The Beautification Committee is getting ready to start their annual process of planting curb lawn trees for residents. Residents pay $50 for a tree, while the mayor and board of trustee members donate the additional cost.

While you start your spring gardens, Jessup recommends putting mulch down because it conserves water. She also suggests residents create their own compost.

“It is a little difficult to do, but it is great for everyone’s garden,” she said.
