Local events and activities your kids can enjoy this weekend

It may be rainy and dreary outside today, but the weather forecast is calling for clear skies on Saturday.

Start making your weekend plans with our latest edition of the Grab and Go Kids Planner. Our guide has free events sponsored by our local libraries, nearby skating rinks, crafts, shows and a backpacking tour at Hofstra University. I hope you find something that piques your interest and allows for some quality, entertaining time with your families. TGIF!

Go Craft Crazy

Why go: In the Children’s Program Room, everything is set up and ready for you to make a special and one-of-a-kind craft  to take home for yourself or someone special. There are tons of materials to choose from.

Explore Different Dance Styles

Where: Long Beach Public Library

What: Dance Visions Presents Favorites and Previews

When: Sunday, Feb. 27, 3 p.m.

Why go: Beth Jucovy and her Dance Visions return to the library to delight the audience with their unique mix of classical, contemporary, break dance, jazz and fusion. This is a multi-media, theatrical, dance performance encompassing six dancers, a narrator and pianist.

Play and Roll in RVC

 Where: Rockville Centre Recreation Center 111 Oceanside Rd. 

What: Roll Around Play Day

When: Saturday, Feb. 26  from 9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. and Sunday, Feb. 27 from 9:15 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Why go: A fun, safe environment for the little ones to run, tumble and play in the gymnasium.

Ages: 1-4 years old

Cost: $8 per family

Amazing Animals

Where: CSTL at Tanglewood Preserve, 1 Tanglewood Road, Rockville Centre (www.cstl.org/index.htm)

What: Amazing Animals Exhibit

When: Saturday, Feb. 26 and Sunday, Feb. 27  from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Why go: This attraction features reptiles (alligators, bearded dragons, snakes, etc.), hawks, owls and the newest members, mini ponies on 17 acres in the nature preserve. There are numerous trails, mostly paved, if you are looking for a beautiful walk around the pond and woods.

 Cost: $6 per person (under 1 free)

Backpack Thru Hofstra

Where: Hofstra University Museum 

What: Sculpture Exploration Backpack tour

When: Saturday, Feb. 26 and Sunday, Feb. 27 

Why go: A day to explore Hofstra’s beautiful campus and their outdoor sculpture collection. Start your day in the museum’s Emily Lowe Gallery to pick up a backpack filled with information and activities. At the end of the tour, return the backpack and each child will receive a gift from the museum.

Age:  4-9 years old

Celebrate Black History Month

Where: Lakeview Public Library, 1120 Woodfield Road, Rockville Centre

What: Black History Month Celebration

When: Saturday, Feb. 26, noon- 3p.m.

Why go: With Black History Month coming to end, celebrate one last tim with music, dancing, story-telling, refreshments and good company. Featuring the Nassau County Guardians Association, Legislator Robert Troiano, Dancing with Cashel Sapphire and "ProsKuneos Kids", Storyteller Donna Washington, Lakeview Girl Scouts, and Voices of Virtue. Digital Adventure

Where: Long Island Children’s Museum

What: The CYBERCHASE™  Challenge

When: Sunday, Feb. 27 at 1 p.m.

Why go: Join Digit from the hit show, CYBERCHASE™, as they solve fun and creative math problems to save Motherboard from Hacker’s virus. Children will learn algebra and geometry in the exciting interactive game show challenge, followed by an episode of CYBERCHASE™ on the big screen! Meet Digit and take a picture with him.

Age:  3 and up

Cost: free with museum admission

Family Art Appreciation

Where: Nassau County Museum of Art

What: Family Day at the Art Space

When: Feb. 26 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Why go: A day filled with crafts, poetry, and art. Your family can take in the exhibit at the Art Space and be inspired by Robert L. Forbes in Let’s Have a Bite! A Banquet of Beastly Rhymes. Then, the children can create their own art/poetry based on what they’ve seen.

Cost: free with museum admission

Travel to the Jungle

Where: Merrick Theater and Center for the Arts, 2222 Hewlett Ave. Merrick 

What: Live performance of “Jungle Book”

When: Saturday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.

Why go: Spend a day in the jungle with Mowgli, Bagheera, King Louie, the lovable Baloo and the rest of the menagerie in this retold classic from Walt Disney. You’ll be singing “The Bare Necessities” all day long!

Movie Day with Yogi

Where: Malverne Cinema 4 

What:  Yogi Bear the Movie

When: Saturday, Feb. 26 and Sunday, Feb. 27 at 1:15 p.m.

Why go: The popular picnic-basket stealing cartoon bear comes to the big screen. Featuring the voices of Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake, and lots of comic hijinks, it's a movie the whole family can enjoy.

Cost: Child: $6.50, Adult $9

Celebrate Year of the Rabbit

Where:  West Hempstead Public Library

What: The Art of Chinese Dance

When: Sunday, Feb. 27, 2 p.m.

Why go: A multi-cultural and interactive dance performance celebrating the Chinese New Year (the year of the Rabbit). The performance includes narration, history and geography of this beautiful dance and the culture it celebrates.

Follow the Yellow Brick Road

Where: BroadHollow Theater Company at the Elmont Public Library 

What: The Wizard of Oz

When: Saturday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.

Why go: A wonderful theater production of a treasured classic. Who doesn’t love the tale of Dorothy and her friends? Revisit the yellow brick road with your family at the theater in the beautifully redone Elmont Library.

Cost: tickets are $10
