Grab & Go Kids Planner: March 12-13

A guide to kid-friendly activities in the neighborhood your whole family will enjoy.

This weekend is chock-full of Irish inspired events for upcoming St. Patrick’s Day. There is also a performance of ‘Seussical the Musical’ at a local school. So break out your kelly-green (or your green thumb for a gardening event) and try one of these suggestions. Many of them are free.

What: Malverne High School production of “Seussical the Musical”

When: Saturday, March 12 1:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Why go: This amazing show is a great mix of many different Dr. Seuss stories. It features much loved characters like Horton and the Cat in the Hat. Have a fun-filled experience revisiting these classic and hilarious characters.

Cost: Tickets are $9 in advance or $10 at the door

Note: Saturday Lunch with the Characters at 11:00 a.m.. For children in 8th grade and under. $3 price includes a lunch of chicken nuggets, chips and a juice box along with a picture with a main character! Adults who are accompanying children but won’t be eating do not need tickets.

Make Mac Jewelry

Where:  West Hempstead Public Library

What: Macaroni Menagerie

When: Saturday March 12, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday March 13, 1 p.m. – 4p.m.

Why go: Drop in to make things with pasta: a necklace, a bracelet or a pasta picture.

Age: ages 4 – grade 5.

Cost: free

St. Pat's Parade Breakfast Fundraiser

Where: CJ's, 225 N Long Beach Rd, Rockville Centre, NY

What: Breakfast Fundraiser for 2011 St. Patrick's Parade

When: Sunday, March 13, from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Why go: Enjoy an all-you-can-eat breakfast with your family while helping to raise money toward the annual St. Patrick's Day parade in Rockville Centre. This year the parade profits will be donated to Our Ladies Children's Hospital in Ireland, The Wounded Warrior Project  in the US and the Nassau Suffolk Chapter of the Autism Society of America.

Cost: $15 per person, Children under 10 are free

Irish Music

Where: West Hempstead Public Library

What: St. Patty’s Day celebration with Jimmy Moore

When: Sunday, March 13, 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Why go: The library turns “green” for this St. Patrick’s Day event. A perfect ‘Erin Go Braugh’ celebration.

Cost: free

Bye Bye Birdie

Where: Lawrence Middle School

What: Students perform this fun, classic Broadway musical

When: Saturday, March 12, 7:30 p.m.

Why go: Older children will enjoy the story and songs in this musical, performed by Lawrence Middle School students.

Cost: $6 per ticket

St. Pat's Craft

Where: Malverne Public Library

What: St. Patrick’s Day Family Craft

When: Saturday, March 12, 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.

Why go: This is a keepsake ceramic craft. An expert will be on hand to help with the painting (if need be). Please have the children wear old clothes or smocks.

Age: 3 – 10 years old

Cost: $5 materials fee.

Jump Into Fun

Where: Lynbrook Public Library

What: Jump for Joy

When: Saturday, March 12, 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Why go: Get the little ones moving and grooving in this music and dance filled hour.

Age: 18 months to 5 years

Cost: free

Kids Bingo

Where: Long Beach Catholic Regional School

What: Bingo games for kids.

When: Sunday, March 13, 4 p.m.

Why go: Kids can enjoy some friendly games of Bingo.

Age: All ages

Get a Green Thumb

Where: Hicks Nursery  100 Jericho Trpk. in Westbury (www.hicksnurseries.com)

What: Grow your own peas in the Children’s Corner

When: Saturday, March 12 and Sunday, March 13 all day

Why go: The kids have an opportunity to plant their own beanstalks. They will be able to take their newly planted beans home and watch them grow. Then in April, they can plant the seedlings outside to produce their own crop!

Age: 11 and under

Cost: free

Princess Performance

Where: Plaza Theatrical Productions, Bellmore Theatre, 222 Pettit Ave., Bellmore (516-599-6870)

What: Production of “Cinderella”

When: Saturday, March 12 at 11 a.m.

Why go: See a live performance of a much loved fairytale.

Cost: $10 per ticket  

Enjoy the Bare Necessities

Where: Merrick Theater and Center for the Arts, 2222 Hewlett Ave. Merrick (www.merricktheatreandcenterforthearts.com)

What: Live performance of “Jungle Book”

When: Saturday, March 12  at 2 p.m.

Why go: Spend a day in the jungle with Mowgli, Bagheera, King Louie, the lovable Baloo and the rest of the menagerie in this retold classic from Walt Disney. You’ll be singing “The Bare Necessities” all day long!

Cost: $9.00 per ticket

Celebrate Irish Culture

Where:  Hofstra University, Physical Education Building, North Campus (www.hofstra.edu)

What:  Annual Irish Festival

When: Sunday, March 13 from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Why go: A family friendly day filled with Irish food, crafts, music and more!

Age: all

Cost: $5 or $3 for seniors (65 and older) and proceeds benefit the Hofstra Scholarship Fund

Irish Band

Where: Long Island Children’s Museum (www.licm.com)

What: Celtic Fun with Darlene Graham and the Shades of Green Band

When: Saturday, March 12 and Sunday, March 13 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.

Why go: The popular, fun and child-friendly music of Darlene Graham returns to the museum to introduce and explore Irish music and culture.

Age: 3 and up

Cost: $4 with museum admission or $8 for the theater only

Leprechaun Craftiness

Where: Long Island Children’s Museum (www.licm.com)

What: Lucky Leprechaun Finger Puppets

When: Saturday, March 12, from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Why go: The mischievous Leprechauns arrive at the museum in the form of adorable finger puppets. The children can create their own and bring the luck of the Irish home with them.
