Icy Conditions Could Wreak Havoc on Morning Commute

LIRR deploys de-icers to prep rails for sleet and freezing rain.

Two dozen states are in the line of fire as yet another winter storm heads our way, according to the National Weather Service. A freezing rain advisory is in effect for Long Island until 9 a.m. Wednesday. Ice accumulations are expected to reach a quarter-inch in some areas, making for dangerous travel conditions during Wednesday morning's commute.

The LIRR is operating "at near normal levels" for the remainder of this evening but have deployed de-icers to prep rails for sleet and freezing rain.

"Ice can have severe impacts on the roads and rails that carry MTA vehicles. Crews will be out inspecting the tracks, switches and signals of the rail and subway network," an advisory on the MTA's website states. "Trains with scraper shoes will be put in service to keep rails free of ice. Chains have been added on buses that will operate overnight to provide extra traction."

LIPA crews advise that ice accumulations could bring down tree branches and power lines. Residents should call 1-800-490-0075 to report a downed wire and visit LIPA's Storm Center to report an outage.
