Jan. 12: Snow Closes Schools, New Village Trustee Appointed

See how the winter storm affected Lynbrook.

Five things you need to know today: Snow, snow, snow, snow and more snow.

We originally had a column chock-full of interesting events happening on Wednesday, but due to the winter storm, many of them have been postponed or canceled. See what changed below.

1 — Schools are closed. The Lynbrook School District played it safe and decided not to wait until Wednesday morning to make their decision. By Tuesday evening, the district announced that all classes and after-school activities (including sports games and practices) had been postponed and/or canceled.

2 — While you're snowed in at home, we urge you to send us photos of your street — kids playing/sledding in the snow, your car buried, and any other snow-related pictures. Also, let us know how the plows are doing in your area. You can send stories, comments and photos to michaelr@patch.com.

3 — While you were sleeping, we were out with our video camera, recording as the snow began to pile up on Lynbrook's roads. Check the site later today for footage.

4 — The Lynbrook Board of Education meeting scheduled for this evening has been postponed due to the weather. We'll keep you posted as to when exactly, as this will be the first meeting since . The board has expressed its concern over a tax cap, as well as rumors of the state possibly charging school districts for each student taking a Regents exam.

5 — Lynbrook Mayor Bill Hendrick appointed a new trustee to the village board on Monday. Visit the site later today to find out who.

Residents, do you know of any upcoming events not in our calendar? Restaurants, looking to promote your latest dinner specials? Email us at michaelr@patch.com and we''ll try to include them in a future "5 Things You Need to Know Today" column.
