Jan. 28: Crime, Fire and More Things to Know TODAY

Here's what you need to know for Jan. 28.

  1. Arrests in Malverne: Remember the string of thefts that occurred in Malverne in early December, when residents reported electronics, Christmas gifts and other valuables had been taken from their unlocked cars? Well, arrested two teens Wednesday night who allegedly swiped a laptop and iPod from a car on Wright Avenue. According to Malverne Chief John Aresta, there may be a connection to other crimes in the village. for the full story. In other village news, will be closed today.
  2. Fire in West Hempstead: While most residents were wrestling with the cold snow outside their homes Thursday morning, were battling a fire that caused devastating damage to a house on Langley Avenue. Check out the story and see photos of them fighting the blaze and take a look at the damage inside the home.
  3. Snow Day Snapshots: The 14 inches of snow that this week's storms dropped on the neighborhood create headaches for some and wintry fun for others. Patch captured it all. packed with over 100 photos, plus video clips, showcasing the highs and lows from Thursday's shovel-and-sled-fest.
  4. Mom Talk: There's a few things of particular interest to local moms today. Patch is asking moms from Malverne and West Hempstead to submit questions they have about issues pertaining to local schools, parenting, youth programs, peer pressure - anything that is on your mind. It could be as simple as what to feed your toddler or as complicated as how to talk to your teen about peer pressure. (You can chose to remain anonymous!) In other mom news, MOST, a support group and social network for the Mothers of parish will meet tonight. (for details.) The group is holding a Fast Food Gift Card Collection this month for the Department of Human Resources. 
  5. NAACP Jubilee: The Lakeview Branch of the NAACP will be holding its Annual Jubilee Celebration tonight at S in West Hempstead from 7pm to 9pm. The night will include music, dancing, light refreshments, a guest speaker and more.
