L.I. American Water May Take Over Aqua New York Operations

Two companies working on major deal.

Lynbrook-based Long Island American Water may soon be supplying more areas in Nassau County if a deal is approved between its parent company, American Water Works, Inc. and Aqua America, Inc.

Aqua America is reportedly looking to sell its New York operations to American Water Works, while the latter would sell its Ohio operations to Aqua America. If both sides agree, it would mean the end of Aqua America's subsidiary, Aqua New York, which supplies Wantagh, Seaford, Merrick, Bellmore, Levittown, and other Nassau County areas.

Residents in those areas have complained about Aqua's high water rates, and the Southeastern Nassau County Water Authority (SENWA) has stepped in to discuss a possible takeover of Aqua New York. Long Island American Water would take over operations currently under Aqua New York.

Bill Varley, president of Long Island American Water, could not immediately be reached for comment on this story. For more information, check back next week.
