Lynbrook Week in Review

A look back at the stories covered by Patch over the past several days.

If you didn't have a chance to browse our site this week, no worries — Lynbrook Patch is looking at all the top stories from last week in our Week in Review.
   
On Monday, the Lynbrook High School guidance department held a workshop for seniors and their parents on how to start the college application process. Counselors went over important deadlines, how to create a resume, and interviewing tips.
   
On Tuesday, Francis Becker defeated Dan Maloney and Frank Scaturro in the Republican primary to retain the party's nomination in the 4th Congressional District. Becker, a Lynbrook resident and longtime Nassau County lawmaker, will seek to unseat Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, a Democrat, in the November general election.
   
On Wednesday, the Lynbrook Public Library hosted "Make Your Computer Work for You" to help senior citizens learn the basics of how to navigate Windows, create and print a Word document, and post pictures of their grandchildren.
   
Also on Wednesday, County Executive Ed Mangano released his proposed budget for 2011. The spending plan calls for no increase in taxes, but for borrowing money and consolidating county departments.
   
On Thursday, the New York State Department of Labor released unemployment figures for August. According to the statistics, Nassau County's unemployment rate dropped slightly, from 7.0 percent and 6.8 percent.
   
On Friday, the Lynbrook Owls played the second half of their game versus the Plainedge Red Devils. The half was postponed from Thursday due to inclement weather, with the Owls up 28-7. (results to appear on Lynbrook Patch on Monday).
