A look at today's top stories and events in Malverne and West Hempstead.

The buzz around town this week is the cap on school superintendents' salaries, tap water testing and the recent business moves on the main streets of Malverne and West Hempstead.

Find out what the top five stories and events are for March. 4:

  1. Salary Cap for Supers: Earlier this week Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that he will propose a bill to place a cap on the salaries of school superintendents across New York State. Check Patch later today for a look at how local school administrators would be affected.
  2. Tap Testing:  Long Island American Water President Bill Varley made a special appearance at the Malverne Village Board meeting on Wednesday to update residents about the steps his company has been taking to improve the quality of the tap water flowing into their homes. Find out what he had to say at 1 p.m. today. Also, learn how West Hempstead is addressing the issues.
  3. Biz Plan Comeback and Closing: The of the Associated supermarket in Malverne, which had closed months ago, are preparing to open their doors and begin delivering on their promise to win back residents' trust, as well as their business. The store will hold a soft opening, perhaps as early as today (Stay tuned to find out.) while it plans for a large grand opening. Also, find out what business in West Hempstead will soon be closing its doors.
  4. Kids' Weekend Planner: We've got clowns, animals, magic, Cinderella and a parade, among other things that your family will enjoy, in this weekend's edition of the Kids Grab and Go Planner. Check back at 12:30 p.m. to get your complete guide to finding the fun that will be happening in the neighborhood this Saturday and Sunday. Village Election: The general election in the village in Malverne will be held on March 15, but your chance to register to vote (if you aren't already) will be tomorrow at from noon to 5 p.m. Patch will also continue its series on the candidates that will be on the ballot tomorrow with a profile on Trustee Michael Bailey who is running for re-election.
