May 19: Parade Boycott, Relay For Life Reminder, Breakfast Benefit and More

A look at the top headlines for this Thursday in Malverne and West Hempstead.

With the school budgets settled, Malverne and West Hempstead residents are now focused on some other big events scheduled for the month including Relay for Life, spring shows and Memorial Day parades.
Here's a look at the top stories for May 19.

  1. Parade Boycott: A decision to change the start time of the Memorial Day parade in Malverne this year has caused some controversy within the community. Veterans groups, who are criticizing village officials for moving the event to 9 a.m., are considering boycotting the parade and holding a small ceremony instead at the regularly scheduled time.   2. Relay for Life: Malverne will host its first Relay for Life fundraiser Friday night for the American Cancer Society. The entire community is invited to come walk the track between 7 p.m. and midnight at the high school, while listening to live music, enjoying refreshments and raising funds for the cause.   3. 9/11 Breakfast Benefit: The West Hempstead community turned out Sunday morning to enjoy pancakes, bagels and coffee while fundraising for a cause close to their hearts. The money raised by the Kiwanis Club through the event will pay to revamp the 9/11 Memorial at once construction is finished.   4. Building Leaders: A program at Valley Stream North High School is molding tomorrow's young leaders by teaching a select group of students how to be proactive, give back to the community and help their peers. Get the story here.
  5. Spring Performances: The students at in West Hempstead will take to the stage tonight to perform a spring concert. Meanwhile in Malverne, students will perform their first production of Peter Pan. Both shows start at 7:30 p.m.
