May 9: Gold Medalists, Rally for Life, School Meetings and More

A look at the top headlines and events for this Monday in Malverne and West Hempstead.

Today we kick off another week by celebrating the accomplishments of the community's young people, question a plan to shake-up local politics and rally around efforts to improve education and fight cancer.
Here's a look at the top stories for May 9:

  1. Rally for Life: The students at in Malverne held a rally recently to raise awareness for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life event, which will take place in the community later this month. Click here to see photos and learn more about this great cause.
  2. Redistricting Nassau: The Nassau County Legislature will hold a public hearing this morning at 10 a.m. in the Legislative Chambers ( 1550 Franklin Ave., Mineola) regarding the redistricting plan proposed by Republicans.   3. School Meetings: Parents, teachers and administrators will come together for a meeting of the PTSA in West Hempstead tonight to discuss important educational issues affecting the district. The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Meanwhile, Malverne schools will hold its Central Council Candidates Forum in at 7 p.m. tonight.
  4. Gold Medalists: Six teens from Lakeview won gold for excelling in the arts recently at the ACT-SO competition. Meet some of these bright young artists who will be representing their community this summer at a national competition in California later today.
  5. "Father of the Bride": Before Steve Martin, there was Spencer Tracy. Don't miss the s Monday Mantinee at 2 p.m. Today they'll be showing "Father of the Bride" - the 1950s version starring Tracy as Stanley Banks and Elizabeth Taylor. Call (516) 599- 0750 for more details. Then, tonight the presents Long Island resident and multiple award-winning crime writer Reed Farrel Coleman. In recognition of Jewish American Heritage Month,  he will discuss how he incorporates ethnic and moral themes into his novels. The event is free and starts at 7 p.m. in the Community Room.
