More Snow Forecast for Lynbrook Area

Village could see up to 7-9 inches by Saturday afternoon.

Don't put your shovels and snowblowers away just yet — the Lynbrook area could see even more snow beginning Friday and continuing into Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

A Winter Storm Watch goes into effect starting Friday morning, with the potential for 7-9 inches of snow accumulation in Nassau by Saturday afternoon. The Winter Storm Watch remains in effect through Sunday morning.

And though the storm is not expected to be as severe as — which contributed to car accidents and suspension of mass transit across Long Island and New York City — there is still the possibility of an ugly commute come Friday evening. With high temperatures hovering near freezing, roads could become slick and see the formation of black ice.

The Lynbrook Office of Emergency Management urges residents not to drive during a winter storm unless it's absolutely necessary. If you are striking out, it's important to have a full tank of gas, a charged cell phone or two-way radio, and be carrying the following:

  • Blankets
  • Shovel
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Extra set of warm clothing
  • A set of tire chains
  • Battery booster cables
  • Energy bars
  • Brightly-colored cloth (to use as a distress flag)

If you do become stuck, emergency management officials urge you to stay in your car and wait for help. Run the engine for short periods of time to keep warm, but keep a window cracked. If stuck at night, keep your dome light on to signal rescuers. Hang a brightly-colored piece of cloth from your car. Lastly, make sure you move your arms and legs from time to time to keep warm.

The Lynbrook school district, library and post office are expected to have normal hours on Friday.

Be sure to check back for updates on the storm.
