More Than 2,600 West Hempstead Homes Lose Power

The Long Island Power Authority restores power to most West Hempstead customers late Saturday night.

UPDATE: Power has been restored to most of the homes in West Hempstead that lost power Saturday night due to the heat wave that has taken hold of Long Island, according to reports from the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA).

As of 9:30 p.m., 2,675 LIPA customers in West Hempstead were experiencing an outage , but by 10 p.m. about half had had their power restored. By midnight, less than five West Hempstead homes were still without power, but another 16 outages still existed in Lakeview near Eagle Avenue. The LIPA Storm Center Web site indicated that power should be restored to these homes by 2 a.m. Sunday.

LIPA released a statement on July 23 alerting customers about an "Excessive Heat Warning" issued by the National Weather Service.

"The combined heat and humidity will again make it feel like over 110 degrees in many locations. While LIPA has an adequate energy supply to meet the needs of our customers, extreme temperatures cause stress on the electric system, which has led to power outages," the company stated.

They added that "LIPA crews have been working around the clock to restore power as quickly and safely as possible. We encourage you to use electricity efficiently during periods of high heat and humidity. The extreme heat can also create hazardous and difficult working conditions for our field crews, which could delay our response times."
