On The Farm: Crossroads Hiring, Opens Indoor Produce Market

Get the latest happenings from the Malverne farm.

It's been a busy month for the farm in Malverne.

The Nassau Land Trust, the non-profit hired by Nassau County to manage the newly reopened farm, started off July with a about the property's name. (It is now called Crossroads Farm at Grossmann's - a nod to the many years the land was operated by the Grossmann Family.)

From there, they have moved forward with a number of enhancements to the farm - adding signs to drive traffic, installing a refrigerator unit and opening up an indoor farmer's market.

No longer will you just find flowers for sale at the farm, as was the case when it first opened in the spring.

This week, farmer Bill Walsh picked the farm's first tomatoes, zuchini and potatoes. Shoppers can now purchase corn, blueberries, peaches, green beans, lettuce, tomatoes, Long Island potatoes, North Fork Potato Chips, Goat Cheese from Catapano Dairy on the North Fork and variety of jams, jellies and preserves from Taste of the North Fork.

Obviously, many of these items have not been harvested in Malverne, but have been selected from local farms in the area.

Nassau Land Trust's Farm Committee also reported that Crossroads experienced the highest grossing one-day sales so far this season last week, calling it "a sign of good things to come!"

They also thanked the many volunteers from Malverne and the surrounding communities who have continuously donated their time and efforts to help the farm flourish. To show their appreciation they opened up a temporary gathering space for the staff and volunteers to eat, meet, and continue to build-up the community.

"Without you, we would not be where we are now," they told the volunteers. "It takes a village!"

Nassau Land Trust is also looking to fill several paid staff and intern positions. To learn more about the job opportunities at Crossroads Farm, click here.
