PHOTOS: Malverne, West Hempstead Merchants Ready for Irene's Worst

Local businesses reinforce windows as skies turn gloomy and rains come down Saturday.

As a reminder that Hurricane Irene was the skies began to darken and rain started falling at a steady pace in Malverne and West Hempstead Saturday evening.

Rain has been coming down in heavy intervals since 12:30 p.m. Saturday, stopping for a few hours and then starting up again. There was no flooding or traffic problems as of 5 p.m., but the streets were quiet and gloomy. A number of businesses around the neighborhood have resorted to using tape and plywood to reinforce their windows.

Local volunteer fire departments and EMS members will be on standby starting tonight.
