Registration Open for LI2DAY Breast Cancer Walk

The walk was organized to raise awareness and funding for the fight against breast cancer on Long Island.

The Long Island 2 Day Walk to Fight Breast Cancer is a two-day, 35-mile walk through Suffolk County. The walk was organized to raise awareness and funding for the fight against breast cancer on Long Island, with 100 percent of the donations raised given to "grassroots service organizations so the funds reach the members of the Long Island community affected by breast cancer."

The walk begins early Saturday morning, June 9, at Smith Point County Park, and will take place on "scenic and secure Suffolk County roads, with full support from the Suffolk County Police Department, as well as local hospitals and ambulance companies."

According to the LI2DAY website, along the walk in two-mile intervals there will be rest stops, food, drinks, entertainment, goodies, first-aid and bathrooms.

"Victory Village at Cathedral Pines represents the 20-mile mark, where walkers will be welcomed by podiatrists, medical aid, chiropractors, physical trainers and massage therapists," the website says.

At Victory Village, a fully equipped campsite, complete with tents, their own gear/personal items delivered by UPS, snacks, dinner and entertainment will be set up for the participants to enjoy the night.

Day two of the walk will take place on Sunday, when participants will wake early for breakfast before walking the 15 miles back to Smith Point County Park. Lunch will be included on Sunday at the Smith Point Marina, located just north of Smith Point County Park.

The lunch also signifies another point in the day: the final procession. "Breast cancer survivors, who are not walking in the event, are invited to join walkers on Sunday for lunch at Smith Point Marina," the website says. "Together, walkers and survivors will cross Smith Point Bridge at 1 p.m. to commence closing ceremonies, where friends and family will meet for an emotional ending to a very special weekend."

To date, LI2DAY has raised nearly $4 million from the annual walk.
