Today marks a new beginning for many students and faculty in Malverne and West Hempstead who head back to class this morning.

  1. School Starts: Students in the Malverne school district, HANC, St. Thomas the Apostle and Our Lady of Lourdes Schools begin classes today, while those in the West Hempstead school district head back Wednesday. (Faculty members only must report to West Hempstead Tuesday for Superintendent's Day.)
  2. 9/11 Hero Walk: The memory of Fr. Mychal Judge, a Roman Catholic priest and a New york City Fire Department chaplain who perished on 9/11, will never be forgotten. Malvernite and NYPD Det. Steven McDonald is making sure of that. Learn more today.
  3. Journey to Lady of America: "No boys allowed" is usually the rule at Lady of America, an all-women gym in West Hempstead, but owner Vita Zorbo made an exception recently. She let Patch's hilarious travel host Steve Strangio (and his cameraman) step inside for a heart-pumping workout as he learned all about this unique, female fitness center.   4. Back to School Extravaganza: To help parents and their pupils prep for the new school year, Dr. Pennie, of Schwartz Family Chiropractic, teamed up with several local businesses for a "Back-to-School Extravaganza" this week. Check out the story and photos today.
  5. School Chiefs Open Up: The administration for the West Hempstead school district is giving parents more access to..well, them. Last week, the officials held the first session of "A Conversation with the District Admistration," where they had an open dialogue with parents, faculty and school board members about improving student achievement.
