Shoveling's Done, Time For Snow Day Fun

With the roads and sidewalks cleared, Malverne and West Hempstead residents enjoyed an afternoon of sledding and playing in the snow.

The morning wasn't pretty for residents who didn't have a snow day and had to schlep into work. The Long Island Rail Road was running  and while the and Town of Hempstead plows had cleared the roads, there was still plenty of shoveling to do if you needed to use your vehicle.

The snow storm, which started around 8p.m. Tuesday and continued into the early morning hours today, dropped a total of 8 inches on Malverne and West Hempstead, according to the National Weather Service. (Other areas in Nassau County, such as Levittown, were hit harder, with a total of 13 inches.)

Plows and salt trucks hit the streets early in Malverne and West Hempstead and by the afternoon, getting around town was pretty easy. All the roads were clear, most residents had shoveled their sidewalks and plenty of businesses around town had their parking lots plowed and doors opened. Residents received their mail, which was during December's storm and even the West Hempstead branch of the LIRR was back in "Good Service" by 12:30pm.
