Update: LIPA Restores Power to Most Homes in Malverne-West Hempstead

UPDATE:  LIPA has restored power to all the homes in Malverne and most in West Hempstead that had suffered outages due to the blizzard. As of 7:45p.m. Monday there were no more active outages in Malverne and less than five customers in West Hempstead were without power.

While most Malverne and West Hempstead residents who lost power during the blizzard Sunday had their electricity restored by Monday afternoon, a few dozen were still left in the dark.

According to the Long Island Power Authority, 37 homes in West Hempstead and only 5 in Malverne were still affected by power outages as of 3p.m. Monday. (in Malverne lost power Sunday night.)LIPA is currently assessing the situations. There were no current reports of power loss in Lakeview.

LIPA employees have been working around the clock to restore power to all of the homes on Long Island. In Nassau County alone, over 1,700 customers are currently experiencing outages. In total, as many as 32,000 LIPA customers have been affected by outages caused by the blizzard, but most are now restored.

 The blizzard that caused over a foot of snow to drop over the island, not only wreaked havoc on power lines but also made it more difficult for LIPA workers to respond to the calls that residents lost power.

According to LIPA's Web site, "High winds continue today and roads are still hazardous. These conditions have delayed our ability to restore service. Our crews have been working through the night and will continue until all storm-related outages have been restored."

LIPA asks residents who encounter any downed wires to assume it is a live electric wire and report it to LIPA immediately at 1-800-490-0075.
