Ways to Use Patch During the Storm

We've got the community covered … with your help.

Long Islanders have been spending the past few days preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Irene. Irene, a Category 3 storm, had already barreled through the Caribbean Islands.

She’s expected to hit Long Island Sunday, bringing with her strong winds, heavy rain and most likely, coastal flooding. 

Patch will be providing updates throughout the storm, although you can help report the action as well. Here’s how:

Safety Tips

Send Photos

Report Outages

Although we will keep you posted on East Meadow outages via the LIPA storm center outage map, let us know if there are any outages near your home. Whether that's your home's power, street lights going out, we want to hear from you! Either send us a message on Twitter or email emilywood51388@gmail.com.

Roads, Trees, Traffic

Send us an email, tweet, or post to Facebook any road closures, downed trees or non-functioning traffic lights you see around town.

Supplies

Is a local store running out of supplies or recently get a shipment? Let your neighbors know!

Shoot Video

Many residents are equipped with a smart phone, whether it's an Android, Blackberry or iPhone. Are you brave enough to shoot video in the storm? Or you can stand under the awning on your front porch! Email videos to emilywood51388@gmail.com.

Be Mobile

Get the iPhone app. If the power goes out, your smartphone may end up being your only tool for getting the info on what’s going on in your community. Click here to get the Patch app for free on iTunes. Not only can you read news on it, but post photos and videos as well.

Volunteer

Our Announcements section lets readers post requests for volunteers. Use it. Depending on the scope of the disaster, volunteers are going to be crucial to mend the community. Any Volunteers Needed announcements posted on the site we will feature prominently on the home page.

Blog About It

When all settles, scores of your fellow community members will have “I was there” stories to share. Don’t keep them to yourself. Sign up to be a blogger and let your neighbors know how you held up during the storm.

Share Stories
